The Making of a Horror Fanatic

I have been a horror-movie fanatic ever since I can remember. When I was in elementary, we didn't have a Betamax or anything we can use to watch for films. So we had to made do for the humongous TV my grandparents used to have. It looked like a big cabinet or a small coffin as far as I can remember. And take note, it had a lock in it so we cannot use it whenever we wish to. We had to wait when it's okay for us to watch the TV. So in short, "swertihan lang" (just by luck) it was just by a slim chance that we can watch movies on TV at that time.

But there were times that we can watch movie through our next door neighbor, Aling Rosing. She would play movies on their Betamax and we had to pay for a peso per head. It was hot and sweaty inside their house because it's all crowded with all of my other neighbors. Especially, kids who just played outside smelling like wet, dirty puppies.

So, when I became a college student and I can already afford the movie tickets, I always made a point that I watch at least 3-4 movies in a week in the theaters. Aside for that, I also began my collection of VHS's and CD's during that time. But it was all lost because of the fire and flood I experienced years before now. At the moment, I keep my present DVD's with a lot of care although they are not all originals.

Going back to the topic of the horror genre, I cannot exactly remember when and where did I start to watch Horror flicks. But whenever I think about scary movies of my time, I always remember the old Shake, Rattle and Roll movies, like the Undin, Manananggal, Ang Aparador, Pridyider, Aswang and Ate. There are also some of my favorite unforgettable movies like Pepeng Agimat (Revilla Sr.), Panday, Halimaw sa Banga, Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara, Impaktita and Tiyanak. I think those movies greatly influenced me for loving horror flicks.

With American scary movies, I cannot remember them all but whenever I encounter some of them at the present I always try to watch them again so I would bring back the good feeling. Some of the films that I can remember are The Nightmare on Elm St., Poltergeist, The Shining, The Omen, the Exorcist and more.

I will write more about the movies that I've seen, liked and disliked from now on.

I may not be an authorized critic but I don't care. I'm still going to write my personal thoughts about it just as a view from a typical movie watcher like me.
Just wait for more of that.

A scene from the ASWANG movie where the Yaya (Manilyn Reynes) is talking
with the very young and cute alaga Aiza Seguerra.

Jean Garcia was the title role for this movie.
